Here’s another DIY sewing video from vlogger Nedoux Sews. In this new vlog, she shows us how to finish seams perfectly and neatly without the use of a weaving machine. She said;

Personally, I believe that attention to the finer details of seam finishing is what sets dressmakers apart.

The finishing of a garment should be both careful and aesthetically pleasing. I saw a piece of advice in one of my sewing books “Always aim to make the inside of the garment look even better than the outside”. I live by that rule while sewing my clothes.

Here are my favourite finishing techniques. These go beyond simply using a serger or overlocker to seal the seam edges, they really boost the look of the finished garment, making it possible to have cleanly finished seams if one is still a beginner and not ready to invest in a weaving machine just yet.

It’s called an electric table top sewing machine. You’ll find stockists at Idumota market, Lagos Island, and even on Jumia & Konga (Much cheaper in the market than in the online stores).

Hi Nedoux, love your vlog. I have a question/request. What kind of fastening would you use on a bias cut dress especially light weight fabric? I find that when I use nylon invisible zips the fabric buckles. Any suggestions and perhaps demonstration as well. Thanks.

I, myself, am very partial to invisible zips because of how discrete they are.

With lightweight fabrics, I’ll recommend reinforcing the zip sewing allowance area with fusible interfacing before sewing the zip. This would solve the “buckling” problem.

I’ll include tutorials in fasteners in the next series.

Hi Nedoux, thanks for the response. I have tried the above suggestion (fusing the zip sewing allowance with interface) but it didn’t work ?. It looks okay but once the garment is worn the area still buckles terribly. I also thought moving the fastening from the center back to the side seam would help but it doesn’t.

Maybe I should try a close end zip………..

lightweight materials can be tricky especially with invisible zip what i normally do that works well for me is to sew the zipper to the fabric 2ce i.e sew the cloth area of the zipper den do a second sewing very close to the zip
